This is a paper for the Material Scotland, Stana Nenadic Memorial Conference, to be held in University of Edinburgh in May 2025.

The paper explores the technological developments in accordion design pioneered by the Scottish performer, Jimmy Shand. I examine his interest in motorcyle racing, the sponsorship of his own racing team and the subsequent influence of these interests on the development of the Shand Merino accordion by Hohner in Germany in 1939.

The paper will also explore Shand's powerful influence in the spread of the phonograph in Scotland through his prolific recording with the Beltona and Parlophone record labels in collaboration with producer George Martin. I'll look at how the spread of the phonograph substantially changed the material culture of the scottish home by replacing family played music with professionally recorded music.
