The presence of a dynamic and attentive cohort could be part of the support offered to a PhD researcher, and this could be part of a supervisor’s role.

Where does supervision start and end?

This provocation was delivered at the workshop/symposium, Doctoral Supervision in the Arts convened by The Glasgow School of Art and Lucerne University of the Applied Sciences and Arts. Within this short paper the following questions were raised: What is the role of supervision as PhD researchers move from confidence in cohorts (in postgraduate study) toward confidence in communities of researchers? How do they make this transition? Who holds that transition as it happens, and how is this part of the research itself? This provocation has been recorded as a presentation to camera.
