| Abstract: | This chapter will ethical issues arising from research that engages with community art practices in the context of heritage most specifically on co-working and collaborative working with communities rather than professional artists. There are multiple long-standing ethical issues that arise out of academic and community co-working and these apply to work in that encompasses both the creative and heritage domains. In particular further thought is required around the ethics issues that arise around in the deployment of digital technologies in these contexts, what is expected of these technologies, what they can deliver, and what the special affordances of digital technologies mean for ethical and equitable collaboration. The fluid and dynamic nature of collaborating with community groups makes for stimulating work that is more likely to give insightful and unexpected results, but it also means that maintaining ethical and equitable relations requires vigilance and responsiveness. This is particularly true with regard to projects deploying digital technologies where the constantly changing technical landscape can make the shape, affordances and longevity of the ultimate outputs difficult to predict, particularly archival outputs. This arises in part from issues around ownership which can be easily complicated by the shifting and open modes of dissemination and the drive in the global north’s academies towards open access. Despite the benefits of open access approaches it raises questions around equitable funding models and equitable access across communities. Heritage projects increasingly deploy technologies with work flows that obfuscate issues of ownership or which unexpectedly cede rights to a software company or to a digital content delivery platform. |
