Abstract:

This paper presented, in a discursive manner meant to prompt discussion and feedback, the advantages of investigating Anselm Adornes' experience of traveling to Jerusalem as movement through space and time.
It went beyond an enumeration of the actual infrastructures involved in his traveling, and investigated how the way he described his experience highlights his understanding - and that of his contemporaries - of the world they lived in. The paper argues that a close reading of Adornes' diary could present spatial explorations as influenced by both traditional classical concepts of the world, and by the newest innovations in maritime travel and cartographical renditions.
