Feminist Frottage: “Speaking with” off the page
Scores are instructional text works, which ask to be read, performed, reiterated and re-enacted. This performative lecture examines the conditions in which scores operate as feminist art practice and writing to enable engagement with the body's personal and environmental materiality, and personal subjectivity. Through the practice of performative, poetic and fictive writing and an engaged interest in brushing alongside the texts and practices of others, including, Yvonne Rainer’s NO Manifesto, the work of Carla Lonzi and Carolee Schneeman, in a form of feminist frottage, this paper considers the roles ‘refusal’ and ‘speaking with’ as feminist processual method, to create performative textual spaces “off the page”, allowing for the incomplete, the pre and polyvocal, the unknown, the unheard, separatist process and collective speaking, to be heard.
