This talk presents the relationship between the urban spaces of Edinburgh Old Town and Edinburgh New Town as expression of the societal changes, economic and political expectations, and cultural environment of Scotland at the time.
This talk is largely based on output 7119 and output 7252, but making the relationship between cultural context and architectural responses evident to an audience not necessarily familiar with the Scottish circumstances. The talk also focuses on a contrast between the Old Town and the New Town, and on the critical decision making-period leading to the shift between one way of living and another.
As this talk will be given at the Universita' degli Studi di Firenze, a comparison between perceptions of public space in Edinburgh and in Florence will be drawn.
