In this interview about my career since 1990, John Bunker devised a set of questions in an interview format that would allow me to discuss my early stack or 'cake' paintings, through the mid 90's process pour paintings, toward the current poured paintings that embed popular cultural signs. This overview was intended to a) introduce a critical understanding of my work in relation to contemporary and modernist painting. And b) to address a re-emergence in my work (and other painters), the relations between making and subjective representation (or expression). The outcome, which was edited by us both from a one hour conversation, allowed me to make sense of the links between the various phases of my painting practice. I was able in retrospect to piece together a critical need to figure out why painting is an important 'expressive' activity by combine my interests in the tableaux of painting with the tableaux of the screen both ontologically and as representation.
