This presentation problematises the issue of quality healthcare improvement and sets up the idea that ‘design' (in healthcare) can effectively be demonstrated to be conducted without designers, i.e. through Experience-based Co-Design (EBCD) - so why bother with Designers? Design has a number of shortcomings: it lacks robust evaluation, scalability, and repeatability in healthcare. However, when we talk about Design, are we really talking about the same thing and are we missing a treat? The presentation opens up a clarification of the definition of ‘designing’, ‘designerly’ and ‘design-like’, and the idea that EBCD and Design are both interested in creating a ‘commons' and infrastructuring but the way they do this is different and creates different effects. Both camps realise that creating a ‘commons' and infrastructuring releases organisational creativity but again with different effects. When we look more closely at both EBCD and Design we see that they both have strengths and weaknesses, e.g., being ‘designerly’ in itself is an insufficient justification for Design’s involvement. We propose bringing together the strengths of both EBCD and Design.
