Abstract: | A group exhibition that makes an exploration of the formal use of the basic drawing principle of line as expressed and explored in different materials and mediums. For this exhibition I made a series of oil paintings on oddly shaped wooden panels , the sizes varied between 20x30cm and 20x40cm. The starting point for these paintings were a pattern I have previously worked with from a Persian carpets, originally made for the tomb of Sheikh Sufi in Ardabil, Iran in 1730, now owned by the V&A museum, the iconic “Tabriz carpet”. I copied a section of the pattern, and embellished on the patterns, painting line upon line around it in different luminous colours to create a visually intense painting. In some ways echoing the labour of the making of the original carpet, and a devotion similar to that required for the creation of religious space. |
