Abstract: | In this multi-media presentation, I will discuss an ongoing body of work about the remnant scots pine forests of Abernethy in the North of Scotland. As place is multi-faceted, everchanging and always becoming, repeated visits over a number of years reveal different aspects and I have made videos, soundworks, prints, sculptural pieces, artist’s books and creative non-fiction in response to my encounters. One piece of work involves repeated visits to locate the standing deadwood in a particular area, and I have described these walks as hidden performances (Performance Research 17.4: on ecology). I will expand this idea to my other work and consider the solitary, private nature of some of walks I undertake with more sociable activities such as working as a volunteer on an RSPB reserve. I will also reflect on a strand of new work based on darkness and night-time walks, and the different layers of what is revealed by this changed perspective. |
