Abstract: | In this multi-media presentation, I will discuss an ongoing body of work about the remnant scots pine forests of Abernethy in the North of Scotland. As place is multi-faceted, everchanging and always becoming, repeated visits over a number of years reveal different aspects and I have made videos, soundworks, prints, sculptural pieces, artist’s books and creative non-fiction in response to my encounters. I have described some of my repeated walks as hidden performances (Journal of Performance Research 17:4). I will expand this idea to my other work and consider the solitary, private nature of some of walks I undertake with other walking with foresters, ecologists and rangers, and, as a volunteer with the RSPB, my engagement in activities such as broodcounting, which one might regard as an annual ritual of movement through space. I will also reflect on more recent night-time excursions. Inherent to these walks are absences and presence, findings, unfamiliarity and coming to know. I will draw John Wylie’s work on ‘self and landscape’ and consider the gradual coming into focus in how encounters become art. |
