Brief Description:

This symposium was established by Dr. Alistair Payne and Maggie Ayliffe in order to construct a forum for discussion around key critical areas in contemporary painting practice. The symposium included papers presented by academics and artists including discussion panels surrounding the major topics evident within the condition of contemporary painting. The papers explored a wide range of important critical aspects of painting practice, from questions regarding the surface, figuration and the feminine, social and cultural issues, abstraction through to the notion of painting in the expanded field. Although wide ranging the specific points discussed interweaved through the nature of the medium.
