'In the Heart of Another Country' explores the concept of home, of longing and belonging. Drawing inspiration from the late artist and author Etel Adnan’s landmark memoir, In the Heart of Another Country (2004), the exhibition charts sentiments of longing, memorial and homecoming through a constellation of artworks that unfold across borders, both real and imagined.
The exhibition brings together more than 150 artworks by over 60 artists. Works from the Sharjah Art Foundation Collection included in this choreographed scenography span from 1935 to the present and have traversed routes from Colombo to London, from Cairo to Zanzibar through to the foothills of Mount Tamalpaïs in California, and back again. What unites these myriad artworks, and their makers, is the emirate of Sharjah, which has historically served as a site of encounter and exchange amongst artists and intellectuals, fostering an ongoing space for the diasporic imagination to come to life. This was the most extensive presentation of works from the Sharjah Art Foundation Collection to date, seen here following its debut at Deichtorhallen Hamburg in October 2022.
Over the past three decades, Sharjah Biennial and Sharjah Art Foundation have provided an internationally recognised platform for artists underrepresented in the global art canon, while offering perspectives from across the Middle East, Africa and Asia. Through these years, the Foundation has established an archive of contemporary thought and form generated by artists through commissions and exhibitions, performances and conversation and its public collection of modern and contemporary art. This exhibition identifies key themes evident throughout the Collection and brings them together.
In the Heart of Another Country: The Diasporic Imagination Rises was organised by Sharjah Art Foundation and Deichtorhallen, Hamburg, and was curated by Dr Omar Kholeif, Director of Collections and Senior Curator, Sharjah Art Foundation.

أكبر معرض لمقتنيات مؤسسة الشارقة للفنون حتى تاريخه بعد إقامته أولاً في متحف ديشتورهالين في هامبورغ بشهر أكتوبر 2022.
يستكشف معرض ""في قلب دولة أخرى"" مفهوم الوطن والحنين والانتماء، ويستمد إلهامه من مذكرات الفنانة الراحلة إيتيل عدنان ""في قلب دولة أخرى"" (2004)، ويرسم مشاعر التوق والذاكرة والحنين إلى الوطن عبر مجموعة من الأعمال الفنية التي تتجلى على امتداد حدود مترامية، واقعية وخيالية على السواء.
يتضمن المعرض أكثر من 150 عملاً لما يزيد على 60 فناناً، جميعها من مقتنيات مؤسسة الشارقة للفنون، تعرض ضمن كوريغرافيا جديدة تمتد من عام 1935 إلى الوقت الحاضر، وتمضي بنا في رحلة من كولومبو إلى لندن، مروراً بالقاهرة وزنجبار، وصولاً إلى سفوح جبل تامالبايس في كاليفورنيا. تجتمع هذه الأعمال المميزة وفنانيها في ربوع الشارقة، التي لطالما كانت على امتداد تاريخها منصة للتبادل والتفاعل بين الفنانين والمثقفين، وفضاء حياً ومتواصلاً لمخيلة الشتات.
ساهم بينالي الشارقة ومؤسسة الشارقة للفنون على امتداد العقود الثلاثة الماضية في توفير منصة دولية للفنانين الذين يعانون من نقص التمثيل في الفضاء الفني العالمي، فضلاً عن تسليط الضوء على وجهات نظر مختلفة من الشرق الأوسط وإفريقيا وآسيا. ونجحت المؤسسة على امتداد تلك السنوات بإنشاء أرشيف للنتاج الفكري والأسلوبي المعاصر الذي أنتجه الفنانون عبر التكليفات والمعارض والعروض الأدائية والحوارات، إلى جانب مقتنياتها من الأعمال الفنية الحديثة والمعاصرة. يتأسس المعرض على ثيمات رئيسة تجسدها المقتنيات المعروضة.
