| Abstract: | A Kind of Glamour About Me is a short film made by Margaret Salmon in dialogue with artist Linder Sterling. The 35mm film presents an imaginative documentation of Linder's collaboration with Holly Blakey's and her company of dancers, designer Ashish Gupta and musicians Maxwell Sterling and Kenichi Iwasa. Filmed on location at Mount Stuart, Isle of Bute and EAF25, Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh, in summer 2025, this dance film is the result of improvisations made in response to Linder's exhibition A kind glamour about me (Mt.Stuart) and Linder: Danger Came Smiling (Inverleith House, RBGE). This film continues my research around women and cinematography, in particular looking at the relationship of the gendered body to lens based technology whilst working with improvised dance. Filming with a group of dancers across two locations related to Linder's exhibitions, I used an Arri IIC and Arri 435 35mm camera as a tool for understanding the analogue process in relation to handheld improvised camerawork through a feminist lens. Unpacking systems of (visual) desire, performer/camerawoman agency and care, the film presents an involved, compassionate camera during its central dance sequences. |
