Glen Croe (otherwise known by the infamous name of the Rest and be Thankful) traverses the landscape connecting remote sections of Argyll and Bute via the A83 trunk road, between Arrochar and Inverary and the Campbeltown peninsula.

This road serves to connect rural communities and is a vital social and economic lifeline to these communities but has been devastated by a series of landslides over the past number of years. Changing ecosytems and weather patterns have led to the surrounding mountain landscape becoming unstable, deforestation over decades and a failure to manage the landscape and react to the effects of a changing climate have witnessed extreme devastation of the land, the trunk road and the ancient military road situated at the base of the glen.

The impact on rural communities and businesses has been devastating with huge diversions required to be able to navigate the countryside to access these rural spots. The original road was built by General Caulfeild, a British Army officer with responsibility (after General Wade) to strengthen the British army garrisons by connecting infrastructural arteries through Scotland to establish and strengthen military outposts to control the Jacobite army.

This work is a 200cm x 110cm digital photograph mounted on aluminium dibond. The large scale of the work aims to draw the viewer into the site and experience the hidden history of this landscape and place. Many of my works reference the history of infrastructure and the now largely forgotten or overlooked significance of place within our landscapes.
