| Abstract: | This reflective event brought together three artist-writers to present and discuss a single small press publication from their university library which has informed and influenced their practice. Dr Jude Browning (Edinburgh College of Art), Professor Maria Fusco (University of Dundee) and Dr Sarah Tripp (Glasgow School of Art) shared their interest in expanded forms of reading, writing and speaking, and how such writing behaves in the public. This event was produced by Spineless Wonders, and convened by Professor Sharon Morris, (Slade School of Fine Art, University College London) and was chaired by Professor Clare Lees (Institute of English Studies, School of Advanced Studies, University of London). Dr Sarah Tripp presented the artists writing journal 2HB (2009 – 2003, CCA, Glasgow) which is currently held in the artists books collection within Special Collections at The Glasgow School of Art Library. Extracts from interviews with Duncan Chappell (Collections Curator and Librarian) and Louise Shelley (2HB Editor, Curator and Lecturer at Central St Martins, UCL) placed 2HB into context, within Special Collections and within art and writing practice in Glasgow from 2008 to 2010. The presentation considered Tripp’s writing practice as supported by the communities brought together by 2HB, CCA Bookfair and the proliferation of art writing journals at this time. Tripp, who designed 2HB, described design, print and the launching of 2HB as a cyclical method of independent publishing which secured community, encouraged experimental writing and performance within the ecosystem of arts in Glasgow. Sentences from 7 volumes of 2HB were read by the Special Collections intern, Charlotte Brogan. The voicing of texts within the launch events was discussed in relation to editorial practice and the growth of a performative reading style building upon the Critical Applause programme (curated by Louise Shelley and Kathryn Elkin, CCA). Tripp concluded by describing her experiences of intense interiority (within writing and reading), and exhibitionism (within performative reading at launch events) that 2HB and similar art writing journals supported during this period in Glasgow. |
