The aim of C&VM was to explore the role cultural assets play in enhancing the creative economy in Borneo, SE Asia. Across this context, a range of complex sustainability challenges have created barriers for craft practitioners and artisans to actively participate within the creative economy. C&VM supported 11 projects with artisans, practitioners and grassroot initiatives from across Sarawak, Sabah and Kalimantan. Each project responded to a sustainability challenge facing the craft sector through exploring and experimenting with new vernacular materials, approaches to documentation and sharing, and prototyping new ways to engage with younger generations.
Each project process was documented in the creation of a project impact film, which sits alongside a diverse portfolio of project outcomes. The C&VM programme culminated with a public exhibition at the Borneo Cultures Museum (Dec 2022): “Serumpun: crafts across borders”. Beyond this, the exhibition was hosted at Think and Tink in Kuching and travelled to the GoDown Arts Centre in Kuala Lumpur. C&VM has also been awarded a grant extension to trace and capture stories of the longer-term impact of the programme.
