Abstract:

An article on the few published recordings of Eleanor Kane Neary. A pianist in the mid-1930s in Chicago, Neary transformed Irish traditional music through the performance of one track. Her technique also provided a fresh model for the use of the piano in Irish music. The context in which the track was recorded is of great interest for the history of Irish-American music and provides a vital backdrop for her classic performance.
