Biography
Simon Beeson studied architecture and has practiced as architect, public artist, and educator. Between 1990 and 1995 he studied and taught at the University of Minnesota, while working as assistant to public artist Siah Armajani. He led a postgraduate unit in Art and Architecture at Edinburgh College of Art (1999-2006), where he also revised and taught first year architecture studies. From 2007 to 2020 he taught at Arts University Bournemouth, as Principal Lecturer and founding Course Leader for BA(Hons) Architecture. Simon was a Research Fellow at the Henry Moore Institute (2002-3), completed a residency at Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop (2018) and was a Research Fellow at Stiftung Hans Arp and Sophie Taeuber-Arp (Berlin, 2019). In May 2023 he joined Glasgow School of Art Highlands and Islands Campus, Forres, as subject lead for MDes Design Innovation and Environmental Design. Currently a PhD Architecture by Design candidate at ESALA, University of Edinburgh.
Research Interests
Interests in architecture as experience; place-making; architecture, art, and design education; studio teaching and playful learning; research towards Forres Forest Town; PhD research title ‘Horizontal relief, architectural representation, and the practice of studio pedagogy’.
Teaching
Lecturer in Environmental Design and Ecology, focused on place-based and student-centred research and teaching, situated in Forres and Moray rural locations. Exploring community-led and more-than-human innovation through environmental and ecological framing. Developing methods for playful participation, co-design, storytelling, and experience informed research with students and the community.
