Abstract: | The artefact is a video of a disguised silhouette walking in a shimmering silver fringed costume. This was inspired by a real-life moment of someone emerging from a shop on Sauchiehall Street in a similar attire. It explores how costumed figures transform everyday spaces into sites of wonder and performance. Drawing on themes of theatricality the video reflects the performative nature of urban public and retail spaces. Such costumes, frequently seen in entertainment or promotional contexts, blur reality and captivate the audience. For various psychological, cultural and social reasons people wear animal and mythical creature costumes during events such as Carnival. Disguising allows individuals to explore different facets of their identity, enabling self-expression. They embody alternative personas, fostering a sense of community and shared experience. Wearing costumes during festivities allows the person to engage in a collective expression of creativity often challenging social norms of dressing and celebrating cultural heritage. | ||||
