This article explores “ecological postmodernism” through the lens of three architectural exhibitions in Milton Keynes: Homeworld (1981), Energy World (1986) and Future World (1994). These exhibitions showcased architecture with conspicuously postmodern, neo-historical and neo-vernacular forms that at the same time responded to an increasing concern with energy saving and sustainable construction. Drawing on archival documents, press reviews, post-occupancy evaluations, and interviews with key participants, the article offers a multilayered historical assessment of eco-pomo in Milton Keynes. It also examines why these building did not lead to the comprehensive ecological restructuring of the British construction industry that many had hoped for.

The article demonstrates, first, that postmodernism, often associated with consumerism and playful individuality, also engaged with significant social concerns of its time, particularly the escalating awareness of the earth's limited resources. Second, it points to the contrast between “eco-pomo” in the 1980s and sustainable architecture four decades later, in particular the concern with energy efficiency rather than saving and the focus on saving money (“monergy”) rather than resources. Lastly, it analyses why certain eco-pomo design features later became mainstream while others did not and evaluates the relevance of historical design solutions to current challenges.
