Abstract: | A response to In the Year of the Quiet Sun by The Otolith Group took place at Cooper Gallery, Dundee in November 2023. The event comprised a screening of the Otolith Groups film, an audio recording by The Otolith Group, and followed by an artist response by me. The event formed part of the series L'École du soir Cinéma. Inspired by Senegalese film director Ousmane Sembène’s concept of cinema as ‘night school’ or l’école du soir for collective study, Cooper Gallery will transform into a temporary cinema over four evenings of screenings of moving image by The Otolith Group. Each screening will be complemented by audio readings from The Otolith Group and responses from invited artists and writers in Scotland. These screenings form part of The Ignorant Art School Sit-in Curriculum #3. My response considered the idea of the stamps as travelling images and travelling miniatures, images and narratives which cannot be destroyed while they are already moving around the world. My response considered some of the millions of daily actions and refusals of colonialism by story telling, reciting, singing, tradition bearing, imagining, making, fixing, mending, sewing, symbolling, growing, plant gathering, baking, cooking, preparing, feeding, caring, building, sheltering, dancing, playing, sharing, bringing, carrying, messaging, teaching, gathering together. |
