Abstract: | Tweed was very popular for menswear in the inter-war period. This paper will explore the range of cultural and social meanings associated with tweed garments in that era. For example, from the early 1920s onwards it began to be popular for the informal fashions that were known in the USA as sportswear. Subsequently, male Hollywood stars were photographed in tweed sports jackets and therefore these garments and textiles came to be associated with new forms of male glamour. The paper will investigate the relationships between tweed in modern menswear and shifting ideas about masculinities, class, respectability and sexual attractiveness. | ||||||
