Abstract: | Interior Design Masters students seek to redefine the subject and expand its possibilities. To assist with this the academic team implemented in the curriculum several learning activities that would allow students to personalise their learning and motivate them to explore the edges of the discipline. The workshops introduced students to different principles and practices in comparison to the traditional approaches to interior making. Among the different forms of design, they focused on re-imagining a spatial event, reflecting on experiences to build a scenario, hypothesise space, speculate on an object (and its use) and engage with new tools that will then articulate, test and communicate design ideas. This current study compares three different practices that were taught during the course in an attempt to reveal alternative means of interpreting and communicating space and place through traces, tools and theatre. In a series of active learning opportunities, students worked with practitioners, and were encouraged to focus on different practices and methods of representing space, history and narrative. The workshops allowed students to engage with a wide range of material, learn from each other and examine different subjects while creating associations with interior design. The exploration of these topics contributed to an increased interest in students to challenge their preferred communication methods of interiority as a practice-based discipline and reflect on the future of the profession. | ||||||
