What were the women’s different motivations and how did this inform on the photographs and films they made? What different narratives about Scotland emerge from their work? The lecture began with an overview of the exhibition 'Glean: Early 20th century women filmmakers and photographers in Scotland', including its scope of 14 women, with work drawn from 17 archives, including 125 framed works, 8 films, 35 related artefacts and 7 events. It then looked at the wider research field, citing the work of other researchers and their focus. From introducing the four exhibition themes - 'Capturing Scotland', 'Nature, Landscape and Travel', 'Recording Community' and 'Women and Society' - I then went on to outline curatorial research methods, including comparative grouping and mapping. The latter has included establishing a timeline of the 14 women's activities from 1900 to 1940, which was presented in the exhibition in the 'Women and Society' section. The lecture compared the women's methods to those of their male peers, in order to define a different approach. The lecture then concluded, looking at the relevance of the 14 women's work to current societal issues.
