The aim of the (online) lecture was to build a picture of Violet Banks (1896-1985), one of the women whose biography is less known, whose work is part of the exhibition 'Glean: Early 20th century women filmmakers and photographers in Scotland', City Art Centre, Edinburgh. By establishing and developing her timeline, then looking at the themes of her work and the subjects she focussed on, and mapping where she took photographs in Scotland, I went on to place her in a context of her female peers, including those her path crosses with; to look at the style of her photography and methods; where she disseminated her work; and concluded by beginning to assess her contribution to Scottish documentary photography.

This online public lecture was part of Historic Environment Scotland's series of online lectures. Historic Environment Scotland hold Violet Banks collection, and are one for the 17 lenders to the exhibition 'Glean' at City Art Centre.
