Abstract: | The aspect of Clyde shipbuilding that was qualitatively exceptional was ships’ interior outfitting, involving luxurious architectural design, fine craft joinery to produce grand neoclassical or baroque compositions or, later, art deco marquetry, carpeting, upholstery and other soft furnishings, sophisticated lighting design and also innovative technical servicing – such as forced ventilation to enhance passenger comfort. Filling a significant gap in the historical record of Glasgow’s design production between the 1870s and the 1970s, it investigates the architects and designers and their approaches in designing interiors for Clyde-built passenger ships. It examines the makers, suppliers and supply chains for the fixtures and fittings, as well as explaining the relationships between ship owners, shipyard technical and managerial staff and the architects and designers and suppliers of interior components. It documents a range of Clyde-built passenger-carrying ships for local routes, international trans-Atlantic and colonial liner routes, cruising and ferry services. | ||||
