Abstract: | Brooch, 2021, silver, 22mm dia. Referencing the size and form of a 20pence piece this object is immediately familiar, while suggesting an act of sedition- defacing the Queens currency with a stamped slogan. In various ways this piece seeks to exploit the power of wearable objects. This piece was created in response to the emotional detachment and alienation observed in many people over the time of the Covid pandemic lockdowns. This work is intended to be shared with loved ones to remind them they have someone who cares, they are valued and have someone who loves them. A simple button, a simple statement. A simple act of giving is elevated with the message on the piece, a message of positive affirmation when placed on the body- the giver is saying I care about you, the wearer is affirmed, declaring ‘I am loved’. A gesture, this is a piece to be given. The work was made to share a positive emotional moment with the act of transferring a tangible message from the giver to the receiver/wearer of the piece. | ||||
