This is an introduction to a facsimile (scanned) reprint of a diary of a teen-aged cyclist for the years 1882-1884. Written in longhand, with some illustrations, it is typical of the sort of record kept by enthusiastic cyclists of the time, describing riding and road conditions, hostelries stayed in, objects of interest encountered and so on. The introduction outlines the context of Johnson's diary for those not familiar with the history of the high bicycle and the roads it was used on.
