Abstract: | The Glasgow School of Art runs three degree shows annually: the undergraduate Degree Show held in June; the offsite MFA Degree Show from the renowned Master of Fine Art programme which is timed to synchronise with the undergraduate show; and the September Graduate Degree Show which includes all of the 12-month Masters programmes. All three of these events are important milestones in the academic life of the Art School. The School of Fine Art participates in all of these Degree Shows (exhibiting approximately 250-300 students per year) as a platform to showcase and present the work of our graduates to prospective applicants and to a professional, but also crucially, in the context of our relationship with the city, a grassroots audience of the artistic community of Glasgow. Given our growing fine art portfolio which reflects developments in contemporary fine art practices and the changing expectations of our students, the School of Fine Art’s degree shows are called upon to function in very different ways for different programmes. Indeed, within the same programme - the BA (Hons) Fine Art which comprises of three very different specialist disciplinary departments - the demands of the Degree Show format are varied. This paper will present three short case studies of divergent practice across the School of Fine Art which will demonstrate the distinct ways in which our nuanced approach to degree show aligns with the core aims of our respective programmes and the ethos of the School of Fine Art. The paper will also reflect upon the relationship between the degree show and learning, teaching and assessment to explore the different ways in which programmes remain consistent with their diverse aims, while ensuring that the degree show format retains its currency. The case studies will include: the scattered degree show, MLitt Curatorial Practice approaches to the assessment and presentation of synchronous and asynchronous offsite and onsite curatorial projects; the professional degree show, learning outcomes relating to the offsite final year MFA degree show in the Glue Factory; and, the divergent degree show, managing equivalence of assessment in a programme with radically different disciplinary practices including studio painting practice, social practice and public art. | ||||||
