An illustrated text written in response to the theme of the journal’s second issue; Corrupting Desires! Technique, Performance, and Control, dealing with the problems of constraint, restraint and domination in relation to musical production, performance and reception. The visual essay that I contributed explores the psychological concept of ‘double-bind’ in relation to a live performance scenario. Referencing the anthropologist Gregory Bateson’s 1972 writings on double binds and a magician’s escape trick manual, the text takes the form of a script which can be re-animated through its reading.
