This commissioned article reflects on the 2014 Indyref and the forms of cultural engagement employed and deployed by politicians and participants in political debate. The article connects the upsurge in political consciousness visible with Indyref to wider currents of participatory political action in Europe since 2011, specifically the Real Democracy Now movement in Spain. In addition, the chapter offers a brief evaluation of the role of democratic engagement in the SNP government 'Ten Years On' and, contending with the then current announcement of Indyref2 in the context of the UK Euro referendum, underscores the importance of ensuring that any campaign for the 'ends' of Indyref2 does not eclipse any of the progressive political 'means' to arise from the activity and fresh thinking of Indyref1.
