Cruise Ships: a Design voyager tells the story of cruise ship design and the development of the cruise industry from the late-Victorian era until the present day. The work locates cruising as an activity within wider socio-cultural contexts and examines how cruise ship design has developed to take account of these developments. The discussion also focuses on issues of hierarchy, gender and post-colonialism in cruise ship design and operation. There has never been a time in history when more cruise ships have been under construction than at present and how this situation came about is explained.
