The Story of the Kaoppel propeller documents the design innovation process leading to the creation of a new type of energy efficient ship's propeller with 'winglets' at the blade tips. The process took 30 years and was led by the Danish engineer J.J. Kappel. New understandings of propeller behaviour were developed through advances in computer software, model testing techniques and the manufacture and testing of a propeller at full scale. The Kappel propeller offers significant economic and environmental benefits and is being adopted by many international shipping companies.
