The study, design and creation of textiles have been part of the activities of the Glasgow School of Art (GSA) since its formation as a branch of the Government School of Design in 1845. Taught as minor courses, fashion illustration commenced in 1907, evolving into costume and clothing design by the 1930s. As a distinct area of study resulting in a qualification, fashion, entered GSA’s portfolio of programmes at postgraduate level in 2004 and undergraduate level in 2010. However, the year 2017 marks the 70th anniversary of the GSA Fashion Show. Introduced in 1947 as an event during Charities Week, the show provided an opportunity to present the student’s latest designs and fundraise around the City of Glasgow. Over the years, the format, location and emphasis of the event have changed, although collaboration, team working and GSA’s Students Union remain central to organisation. This paper discusses the evolution of the show through ephemera held by alumni and the GSA’s Archives and Collections, including posters, flyers, invitations, photographs, films, press cuttings and garments. Plans to celebrate the anniversary of the event through an exhibition and related events will also be described.
