This issue of the yearly journal was edited by Ben Greenman and is on the theme of Scottish art in the First World War. The majority of the contributions to the journal were papers presented at a symposium at The Black Watch Museum, Perth, on 29th February 2015, and additional articles broadened the theme to include art collections in Scotland and the recent work of the artist Graham Fagen.

The selected essays cover a range of concerns, focusing on the period of war itself and the years after. There are different approaches taken to the latter, although each essay shows how the representation, memory and retrospective view on the period of war can be as insightful as the study of what artists did and produced in these years. This includes the acts of honouring and commemorating the dead in in the work of Helen Lamb, as well as the important role of the posthumous portrait. The long retrospective view also provides an opportunity to consider the significance of material not produced by the trained artist, such as the work by convalescing soldiers held in the Lothian Health Services Archives. And other essays look at the work of fine art and commercial artists and their inter-changeable roles during the war years. Focus is also given to the institutions and public role of the artists, including the appointment of the first war artist by the city of Glasgow.
