Abstract: | Glasgow School of Art holds one of the most comprehensive archives of any UK art school. Containing documentation about the institution’s history from its foundation in 1845 to the present day, alongside examples of student and staff work, and teaching aids such as plasters casts, textile samples and lantern slides, the Archive captures information about both places and processes of artistic production and the contextual factors which have helped to shape them. This paper explores how and why GSA’s archives were created, collated and catalogued. It considers how these activities have impacted on the use of the archives (historically and currently) by GSA’s staff and students, and how the archive has, and continues to, interact with the legacy of Charles Rennie Mackintosh. | ||||
