In May 2014 a fire severely damaged areas of The Glasgow School of Art’s Mackintosh Building. Since this date physical access to its A-listed interior and its museum and archive collections has been heavily reduced. However, in response to this unexpected challenge, GSA has maintained a high level of visitor engagement through the development of online resources and adaption of physical spaces. The Archives and Collections service has also reviewed its acquisition, documentation and collection care activities in order to become more efficient and adaptable. This paper will describe this work in more detail, discussing aspects of GSA’s existing practices which enabled the service to adapt and be resilient in the face of upheaval; it will explain how these solutions have had a positive impact on stakeholder relations; and it will reflect on how this experience has enhanced the Archives and Collections’ ability to deal with future challenges (whether funding, policy or business continuity related) by becoming a more resourceful and robust service.
