Textiles have been part of the activities at The Glasgow School of Art (GSA) since its formation in 1845. The Schools’ Library Special Collections and Archives contain an abundance of textile resources, which offer a wealth of potential for study and investigation. This paper outlines the research strategies for three projects that utilise these resources. Interwoven Connections: The Stoddard Templeton Design Studio and Design Library, 1843 – 2005 centred on a group of Scottish carpet manufacturers. Concentrating on the Stoddard Design Library, now held by the GSA Library, the project received funding from the Royal Society of Edinburgh. Visual enquiry combined with historical investigation and oral history interviews resulted in the production of an exhibition, accompanying catalogue and various outreach activities. The publication Textile Treasures by Liz Arthur (2005) provides insight into the history of Textile Design at GSA, focusing predominately on the Needlework Development Scheme. In 2014, GSA Archives and Collections launched its online catalogue. In its early stages, the second project featured builds on previous publications and existing resources to investigate the history of textile and clothing design at GSA, relating specifically to the importance of collecting and archive utilisation to enhance learning and teaching. An exhibition and networking events (GSA, November-December 2015) will facilitate discussion to formulate plans for future investigation and acquisitions. The final project discussed will commence in August 2015, funded by The Textile Society, Audrey Archivist’s Award. This project centres on the work of GSA graduate, Fraser Taylor and The Cloth, produced during the 1980s. The research strategies for this project comprise digitisation, cataloguing, object and document analysis. Workshops will be used to enhance access to and awareness of this part of GSA’s Archives and Collections and provide a platform for discussion to formulate further projects.
