Recognising a building is of national or international significance is one thing; ensuring that the very same building is adequately resourced or properly managed to maintain its physical condition and future survival is quite another. In Glasgow, public interest in the work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh has reached an unprecedented level. However this success comes with added responsibility. There is growing pressure on the buildings themselves as time takes its toll and in many cases, visitor numbers add to the daily wear and tear. So there needs to be continued investment but how to do that with limited resources? And as each Mackintosh building is truly unique so too are the management issues surrounding the continued operation of each individual property. These are indeed challenging times for everyone.
