We designed and constructed plot 1 and plot 5 at the Housing Expo. It was part of a Scottish Government Initiative to examine both Sustainable Communities and new forms of housing. We were involved in looking at the typology of a terrace of houses for Cairn Housing Association and the design of a live /work unit for private sale . The terrace contained 4 dwellings and the live/ work ‘Corner House’ was designe for a single family The terrace site was near the entrance to the site and had the responsibility to acknowledge frontage in this direction .The corner house sat on the corner of what is designed a shared recreation place for the residents –a kind of village green . We were interested in rural housing forms and how they might inform our designs .Options in materiality and what might be achieved with a modest palette were a consideration. Internal volumes and spaces that interlocked were an outcome of the above exercise Working with local builders ,speed of construction and affordability were factors that we considered and discussed with the clients .
