As part of the Highland Housing Fair (renamed Scotland's Housing Expo) studioKAP designed and realised two of four competition-winning houses. The houses were required to have the highest possible environmental standards whilst being affordable to the everyday housing developer (a clash of ambitions which proved to be a contradiction in terms in reality). The design tries to achieve three key things which were not part of the brief:
1. To reinvent the domestic hall as a destination for children's play, working from home as well as a place of arrival and circulation. 2. To address the often problematic issue of communal space between developer-built houses which help encourage a sense of sociability and communal activity and ethos. 3. To address the issue of developer-built houses appearing to look alien to their physical context.
