A design entered in international competition for low cost and skill-based self build housing in Luanda. The brief stipulated plot sizes and the requirement that the individual dwellings needed to be able to be combined successfully to form a cohesive settlement. The solution turns the rather inappropriate title on its head to invent a constructional system which gives users significant build freedom within certain parameters without the risk of the overall strategy unravelling. The resulting solution prototypes a building system capable of creating a series of open and covered spaces which address issues of territory, privacy, small holding lifestyle and architectural character within a Global South context.
