Abstract: | The Tenementals are a Glasgow-based folk-punk band comprised of academics, musicians and artists who have been recording a series of songs that explore the radical side of the city's past - Their debut album Glasgow: A History comprises nine songs which explore the radical side of Glasgow's past, including men who died fighting fascism in the Spanish Civil War, militant Suffragettes of the early twentieth century, and the 1820 Radical War. The songs, also interrogate Glasgow's past and present entanglements with Empire and slavery and celebrates the city's culture of pleasure and excess. The album is released on Strength in Numbers Records and supported by Glasgow City Heritage Trust. Rich and varied in musical form, this is not a nostalgic trip down memory lane, but an attempt to seize moments of Glasgow's radical past and blast them into the future. Ronan Breslin, David Archibald (Glasgow University) and Johnny Smillie are credited as producers of the record.

Additional Information: | The initial research question centred on how a recorded collection of songs could reflect the radical history of Glasgow via popular music performance and recordings. The methodology involved a collaborative process between academics and musicians workshopping and developing nascent song ideas via a process of rehearsals, discussion, demo sound recordings and rigorous evaluation and revision of these initial sound recordings. Ronan Breslin led this process of evaluation and revision prior to the final arrangement, recording, mixing and delivery of the final output though conceptual and textual content was finalised by David Archibald (GU). This was an iterative process based on RB's experience as a sound studio engineer and his perception of how the Tenementals recordings would be perceived by a wider audience. This perception is rooted in an informed literary and practical review of music production via historical and contemporary contexts.
