Artist’s Type Foundry is an online repository for typefaces made by artists.

For Glasgow International 2018, Artist’s Type Foundry commissioned typefaces from Christopher L G Hill, feat. untitled, unrecognised, anon and not named, Jarsdell Solutions Ltd. And It’s Our Playground. The Spring/Summer Collection ’18 is available to download free of charge and was supplemented with an installation of three-dimensional manifestations of each font at Good Press, Glasgow. The event was marked with the publication of type specimens for each commission.

Artist’s Type Foundry is a project based firmly in a belief of ‘why not?’. It is routed in well-trodden DIY methodologies prevalent in art, music and publishing while manifesting these methods within contemporary, consumer-level technologies and download culture. Akin to online repositories such as Ubu Web, the project is hoped to be viewed through the same lens, ATF could become the ‘Robin Hood’ of typography. Collaboration and facilitation are key to the project ensuring the artist; a practitioner with little idea of how to create a digital font, has their concept fulfilled via the offering of a specialised, yet self-taught skillset.
