Neuroscope is an output of Material Beliefs, a public engagement project funded by the Engineering and Physical Research Council (EPSRC - EP/E035051/1). Neuroscope was a group endeavor lead by Elio Caccavale, along with researchers and doctoral students based at Reading University. Neuroscope comprises of an interactive toy with a screen-based interface allowing the user to interact with a culture of brain cells in a remote laboratory. As the virtual cells are 'touched', a signal is sent across a network and the actual neurons in the laboratory are electrically stimulated. The cells then respond with changes in activity that may result in the formation of new connections. The digital representation of those cells in the neuroscope is then updated, so that the user experiences change visually in real time. In this way the Neuroscope enables interaction between the user and cell culture as part of a closed loop of interaction.
