Transformation design and participative design processes have much to offer the cause and advancement of inclusive design (ID). There is also Research councils the emphasizetion of the need for, and value in, greater inter-disciplinary collaboration to address ageing population challenges. However, the depth and domain-specificity of the terminologies and data formats of specialist disciplines are such that they can often be difficult for those from other disciplines to access, not least lay audiences. One of the challenges is to make consultation and development processes participative, and also information accessible across a wider range of appropriate disciplines. This would go some way to developing a greater range of insights and empowering more stakeholders, including those normally regarded as the ‘subjects’ of research. The authors discuss the achievements and value of visualizing biomechanical data on functional demand obtained during daily activities from older adults in the 60+, 70+ and 80+ age groups. The format of visualization enables physiotherapists, occupational therapists, designers, bioengineers, human factors specialists and potentially older adults themselves, access to the data. O These older adults have their own valuable insights to complement those of specialist disciplines which are vital to include consider in developing a fuller understanding of issues that affect their quality of life. The design of, and pilots towards a full-scale study, and insights and conclusions to date are also discussed in this working paper.
