Faced with the inevitable aging of the population, many countries are articulating programs to promote age-friendly cities. In the United Kingdom this group represents more than 20% of the population and, sustained by the policies of “aging at home”, the vast majority expect to grow old connected to their communities and with affordable costs for their care. High streets - major commercial thoroughfares in British cities - are a prominent feature of urban heritage that are serving this purpose. This discussion presents the case of Edinburgh's “high streets” and their potential to promote social inclusion. This study has found that older adults are regular users of these areas and that daily use promotes their well-being in relation to four dimensions: social interaction, personal autonomy, emotional well-being, and a sense of place. These dimensions are articulated with the salutogenic model of assets for health promotion in a comprehensive framework that combines interventions in the urban heritage environment with aging policies at home.
