Abstract:

Published to coincide with the exhibition at Street Level Photoworks 'Body of Land' curated by Fòcas Scotland for Glasgow International Festival of Visual Art 2020/21, 'A Visual Lineage...' discusses the new series from artist Sekai Machache 'The Gathering,' 'The Oracle,' 'Black Aspect,' 'White Aspect' and 'Red Aspect.' Placing these works in relation to the work of Maud Sulter (1960-2008) and Rotimi Fani-Kayode (1955-1989), the essay discusses the significance of theatrical staging and symbolism of draped fabric in an art historical context, alongside drawing of the cultural history of the colour palette deployed.
