Working with three materials (Stone, Brick and Timber), three building traditions (Scottish, Dutch and Alpine) and three cities (Glasgow, Amsterdam and Vaduz) the participants in Crafting the Facade have had to confront both our shared bodies of knowledge and our divergent histories, vernacular traditions, cultural and environmental conditions, all of which contribute to the way choose to design and to build. From Semper and through Frampton, while we may have creative practice or traditions that appear to be alike, it requires a careful unravelling of the thinking behind these to see if they are indeed the same or only similar in appearance. Simultaneously we can also discover how divergent our building practices are, growing out of unique traditions and subject to very different contemporary pressures and drivers.
